| Good shot apenpaap.
This mission has been making me nervous for 3 years now. So much wonderful potential, and so much money spent, I just get the feeling that something will go wrong.
But I was happily surprised on launch day, so I hope to be happily surprised again!

Yeah, a mission like this in this era where 'cheap' often seems to be the most important word in spaceflight is splendid, yet dreadful if it goes wrong. Considering the history of probes to Mars, it is quite worrying...

| Quote (apenpaap) Considering the history of probes to Mars, it is quite worrying... I find two reasons for hope in this case: 1) The USA has a 5/6 success rate for Mars landings to date 2) The amount of extra money and the extra 2 years of time given to the MSL team mean that they were able to more thoroughly test the spacecraft hardware and especially software, and to plan for a broader range of contingencies.
But there's always the unexpected and the uncontrollable.
We'll find out in 38 hours

| Hello everyone! Just recently found myself downloading Space Engine thanks to Kurt of 'Far Lands or Bust!' fame doing a quick let's play of it. Since I've been a huge fan of science and science fiction for years, I figured it would be worth a look... which turned out to be something of an understatement. This is easily the most beautiful astronomy simulator I've seen.
Now, since this would otherwise be off topic, a quick picture of a terra-with-life on the far outskirts of Andromeda:
